Signs of the adhesion process of the abdominal cavity, development, treatment

The adhesion process often occurs after surgical interventions on the organs of the abdominal cavity. It can pass without any manifestations, but it can also cause quite pronounced discomfort. In some cases, the adhesion process occurs outside of surgical interventions and not only in the abdominal cavity. An idea about this pathology, including what the adhesion process in the small pelvis in women is, will help to seek medical help in time.

Dynamics of the development of adhesion disease in the abdominal cavity

All organs of the abdominal cavity are surrounded by peritoneum, which serves to protect them from damage. If some pathological process (mostly inflammatory) takes place in the organ, fibrin fibers fall out in this place, forming adhesions that separate this location from healthy organs. Such a process is triggered by a perforated stomach ulcer, destructive appendicitis, and so on. Adhesions can also occur in the abdominal cavity as a result of surgical intervention as a reaction to touching surgical instruments, getting on the tissues of talc, which is used to treat surgical gloves, and so on.

Due to the presence of adhesions, the organs of the abdominal cavity are glued together. The result of such gluing will be a violation of blood supply to the organ and its functions. So, if adhesions have formed between the loops of the intestine, intestinal obstruction is formed - there is a violation of defecation, abdominal pain, which are signs of the adhesion process of the abdominal cavity.

In the international classification of diseases, the adhesion process in the abdominal cavity and in the pelvis is considered separately.

Reasons of the adhesion process in the abdominal cavity

The pathological condition under consideration can develop due to a wide variety of reasons. There are three main groups of factors that can provoke the formation of adhesions:

  1. Mechanical injuries. This is damage to the abdomen from a fall from a height, a bullet or knife wound, as a result of surgical intervention.
  2. Diseases of the organs of the abdominal cavity of an inflammatory nature. Thus, adhesion disease can develop as a result of existing or after transferred cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder), enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine), adnexitis (inflammation of the ovaries) and so on.
  3. Chemical damage to abdominal organs. It is most often observed when bile or stomach contents are spilled (for example, when a perforated stomach ulcer occurs).

Often the adhesion process develops in the small pelvis. It can develop rapidly, with characteristic symptoms, or be asymptomatic. Yes, adhesions after caesarean section are often not manifested in any way. They can be diagnosed when a woman consults a doctor about the impossibility of becoming pregnant again, since the adhesion process in the small pelvis can provoke female infertility.

Pains with intestinal adhesions and other symptoms

There are several signs that may indicate the development of the described pathological process:

  • periodic vomiting that occurs regardless of eating;
  • pain in the stomach or in the chest cavity;
  • chronic constipation;
  • violation of gas discharge.

These are characteristic signs of the adhesion process. Pain in intestinal adhesions may not depend on eating and increase over time. Symptoms of diaphragmatic adhesions are manifested by pain at the border of the chest and abdominal cavity, impaired excursion (movement) of the diaphragm, and difficulty breathing. Clinical symptoms of the adhesion process in the small pelvis may be absent.

Adhesion disease proceeds slowly: pain in the abdomen occurs often, then becomes constant, its intensity increases.

Treatment of adhesion process

Treatment of postoperative adhesions is carried out using conservative and operative methods. There is no rush to resort to surgical treatment, as repeated invasion of the abdominal cavity can provoke an even greater development of the adhesion process. The operation is mandatory if there are critical changes in the abdominal cavity. The severity of adhesions can be determined only during surgery - for example, one that is performed due to intestinal obstruction. The most effective method of removing adhesions that have formed around the fallopian tubes is laparoscopic surgery. The recovery process after such treatment is fast and with minimal risk of complications. Conservative treatment of adhesion disease is based on diet (restriction of coarse-fiber foods) and physiotherapeutic methods.

The doctor decides how to treat adhesions after appendectomy - it can be surgical intervention or conservative methods of treatment (diet, physiotherapy). At the early stages of the adhesion process, it can be influenced by conservative methods. Medical treatment of the adhesion process can also be prescribed in gynecology - for adhesions that have arisen in the appendages, vaginal suppositories are used, but this therapy is not very effective.

When adhesions occur after removal of the uterus, treatment is carried out extremely infrequently, since they do not cause a feeling of discomfort, and the reproductive function is in any case irreversibly lost. In this case, the doctor determines the advisability of treating the adhesion process based on the patient's complaints.
