Thrush in women, or vaginal candidiasis – this is an inflammatory process occurring in the mucous membrane of the vagina. The frequency of diagnosis of this disease is extremely high, therefore, it is necessary to be able to recognize and correctly treat thrush.
Causes of thrush in women – this is the growth of colonies of yeast fungi of the genus Candida. This growth can begin against the background of a combination of some factors:
Symptoms of thrush are pronounced, so it is unlikely that a woman will be able to ignore the beginning of the development of the pathological process.
Since itching, swelling and heartburn are present, pain during sexual intercourse and unpleasant sensations during urination can be added to the symptoms of thrush. Symptoms of thrush in women are variable – for example, some patients have only heartburn and itching in the area of the external genitalia and the entrance to the vagina, while others complain of a large amount of cheesy discharge.
Many consider this disease to be insignificant and safe. However, in reality, vaginal candidiasis can take on a chronic form, and then its relapses will be very frequent – 4 or more times a year, regardless of the treatment that will be carried out. Such thrush is very difficult to treat, often leads to complications, when the intestine, bladder and other internal organs are involved in the pathological (inflammatory) process.
The disease often accompanies other infectious processes – for example, chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis. Therefore, when the patient receives complaints characteristic of thrush, the doctor sends her for a full examination.
Before prescribing treatment for thrush, the gynecologist must conduct a comprehensive examination of the woman and clarify the diagnosis. When examining a woman on a gynecological chair, a specialist will note redness and swelling of the labia minora and labia majora, in the folds of the external genitalia and directly at the entrance to the vagina, white, thick or lumpy discharge may be visually recorded.
The doctor must take a smear from the mucous membrane of the vagina and cervix, which, when examined microscopically, reveals a large number of fungal colonies. But this method of laboratory research of biomaterial is not informative, because the doctor cannot determine the exact type of fungus. For an in-depth examination, a bacterial smear is cultured, which is necessary for the selection of effective antifungal drugs – only in this way the treatment of candidiasis in women will be quick and complete.
Express tests for detection of sexually transmitted infections must be carried out; if the results are positive, the woman will be prescribed comprehensive treatment. If a chronic form of the disease is diagnosed, the patient will have to undergo an examination for the development of diabetes (blood glucose test) and intestinal dysbacteriosis.
Modern medicine offers many medicines that literally get rid of thrush in a few days. For treatment, antifungal drugs are used, which can be presented in the form of vaginal tablets/ointments/suppositories – for example, Pimafucin, Ifenek, Micozoral, Zalain and others. But such medicines will be effective only for thrush, which occurs in a mild form, without other sexual infections. Most often, doctors prescribe suppositories for thrush – it is convenient, efficient and practical.
If the disease proceeds in a severe form or is burdened by other sexual infections, then systemic antifungal drugs cannot be dispensed with. They are used in the form of tablets or solutions for injections.
Candidiasis in pregnant women deserves special attention, since it is impossible to use conventional antifungal drugs for treatment in such a situation. Thrush during pregnancy is treated only with local drugs (suppositories, vaginal tablets and creams), the doctor will definitely prescribe a special diet for the patient and will regularly monitor her health for early detection of health problems.
Vaginal candidiasis (thrush) – a fungal disease that requires qualified medical care. There are a lot of folk remedies, there are even recipes for lotions and applications, douches and baths for the treatment of this disease, but there will be no proper effect – only taking antifungal drugs prescribed by a doctor guarantees recovery.
