CT scan of the abdominal organs. Features of the conduct. Medical aspects

CT of abdominal organs, despite the huge number of various diagnostic methods, remains one of the most effective. It is extremely accurate and requires few resources and time.

Organs that can be examined

Computer tomography of all organs of the abdominal cavity gives accurate results, these are:

  1. Organs that include parenchymal tissues (gallbladder and large bile ducts, liver, spleen, pancreas).
  2. Hollow organs of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, all sections of the small (cavity, duodenum, and ileum) and large (cecum, colon, and rectum) intestines).
  3. Departments of the spine that participate in the "structure" of the abdominal cavity (bone fragments of the thoracic and lumbar sections).
  4. Elements of the peripheral nervous and vascular system located in the abdominal cavity.
  5. Abdominal lymph nodes and large lymphatic vessels.

Computed tomography of the abdominal cavity provides valuable information for clinicians:

  1. Sizes of abdominal organs, mutual location.
  2. Condition of internal organs.
  3. The presence of an inflammatory process.
  4. Oncosis (benign and malignant).
  5. Disruption of the integrity of abdominal organs.
  6. Congenital diseases (for example, a CT scan of the esophagus allows diagnosing its congenital narrowing).
  7. Disturbances in blood vessels that provide normal blood supply to the organs of the abdominal cavity.
  8. Disruption of the nervous structures that support the work of the abdominal organs.
  9. Structure of bony elements that limit the abdominal cavity - sternum, spine, lower ribs.

Indications for CT scan of the abdominal cavity

CT of internal organs is recommended for patients suspected of the following pathologies:

  1. Liver disease: inflammation (various hepatitis), cirrhosis, tumors.
  2. Diseases of the biliary system: acute and chronic cholecystitis, cholangitis (inflammation of the walls of the bile ducts), concretions (stones), neoplasms.
  3. Damage of the pancreas (acute, subacute and chronic pancreatitis, tumors).
  4. Disorders from the side of the spleen (death of part of the spleen tissues due to blockage of blood vessels), oncological processes).
  5. Purulent processes due to complicated and advanced diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, various cysts.
  6. Disruption of integrity due to injuries, varying degrees of bleeding in the tissues and abdominal cavity.
  7. Congenital anomalies.
  8. Cancer of the small and large intestine (CT of the intestine with contrast significantly facilitates the diagnosis).

Contraindications for CT scan:

  • Pregnancy (any term).
  • Mental shifts.
  • Weight is more than 200 kg (conducting research on patients with this weight is not possible on all computer tomographs).
  • Allergic reaction to iodine-containing drugs (during CT of the abdominal cavity with contrast).
  • Complicated kidney and liver diseases.
  • Severe complications of any type of diabetes.
  • Oncological and inflammatory processes on the part of the thyroid gland.
  • Preparation for abdominal CT scan

Given the fact that patients are traditionally concerned about the degree of radiation, they should be informed about the safety of the procedure before CT, as well as asked about allergic reactions in the past (in particular, to iodine-containing substances).

2-3 days before the manipulation, you should stop consuming foods that cause flatulence (intestinal bloating) and constipation. Two days before the CT scan, the patient takes activated charcoal or its analogues, and if necessary, he is given a cleansing enema. Preparation for CT of the abdomen with contrast is almost no different from preparation for CT without contrast. CT of the abdominal organs must be performed on an empty stomach.

During the procedure, you need to lie still, not moving, breathing measuredly and calmly - otherwise the images-slices will turn out to be of poor quality. If you suddenly experience dizziness, nausea, "flies" in the eyes, a headache, you should immediately inform your doctor.

    How computer tomography works

The patient lies on a table that moves relative to the scanner where the sensors are mounted. They record sections of abdominal organs in real time (display them as pictures on the monitor), and also record these images on optical media.

Two or three hours are enough for an experienced doctor to qualitatively analyze the research results.

Spiral computed tomography of the abdominal cavity is the most advanced diagnostic method. Its feature is that the emitter rotates in a spiral, simultaneously making gradual, uniform movements of the table on which the patient lies. As a result, images are obtained in any planar direction.

It is possible to perform a high-quality CT scan of the abdominal cavity in Kyiv in our clinic. All the necessary information is presented on our website:https://dobrobut.com/.
