Hydrosalpinx - symptoms and treatment
In gynecology, a common diagnosis is hydrosalpinx. This is the name of a pathological condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the fallopian tubes. The second name of the disease is a violation of the patency of the fallopian tubes. Treatment of hydrosalpinx without surgery is quite possible, but only under certain indications determined by the doctor.
Causes of hydrosalpinx
Gynecologists distinguish between unilateral and bilateral hydrosalpinx, the causes of which can be:
- inflammatory diseases of the uterus and its appendages, which ended with complications in the form of adhesion processes;
- sexual infections in a chronic form - for example, chlamydia, gonorrhea;
- failed surgical intervention in the treatment of pathologies of the internal genital organs;
- tumors (benign and malignant) localized in any genital organ.
Symptoms of tubal patency disorder
The disease can be asymptomatic for a long time. The only thing a woman can pay attention to is the absence of pregnancy due to the complete refusal of contraceptives. Pronounced symptoms of tubal patency disorder appear later, when the pathology is actively progressing:
- an acute form of the disease is accompanied by a sharp rise in body temperature;
- a woman is bothered by weakness and a constant feeling of fatigue for no apparent reason;
- pulsating pains of a non-acute nature appear in the lower abdomen;
- a pronounced blush appears on the patient's cheeks;
- there may be rapid heartbeat and tachycardia.
The main symptom is the lack of conception - hydrosalpinx and pregnancy are incompatible. It's simple to explain: with healthy fallopian tubes, the egg moves freely through them and is available for fertilization. If there is liquid in the cavity of the tubes, the cilia, which are located on the inner walls and participate in the advancement of the egg, do not function, they "glue". Pregnancy is a priori impossible.
Chronic fallopian tube patency disorder is most often diagnosed accidentally during an examination by a gynecologist. For suspicions of this disease, the doctor will prescribe a deeper examination of the patient - for example, the size of the hydrosalpinx will be determined by ultrasound, the presence of inflammatory/infectious pathologies will be clarified, and the presence of benign/malignant neoplasms will be determined.
General principles of hydrosalpinx treatment
After making an accurate diagnosis and obtaining a complete description of the pathology, the doctor will select the type of treatment - it can be surgical or therapeutic. The operation to remove the hydrosalpinx is not performed in every case - first, the woman is prescribed antibacterial therapy, douching with decoctions of medicinal plants, hirudotherapy. If conservative treatment does not give positive results, surgical intervention will be appropriate.
Laparoscopy is most often prescribed - for hydrosalpinx it is the optimal choice. During the operation, the surgeon removes/cuts out any adhesions in and around the fallopian tubes. The result is restoration of fallopian tube patency, which, however, does not mean an increase in the probability of conception. The problem is that the villi remain motionless, and the tubes themselves lose their ability to actively contract, and the egg cannot advance into the uterine cavity on its own. Only laparoscopic surgery for hydrosalpinx gives a chance to conceive naturally.
